13 February 2013

First Deputy Minister Sergey Velmyaykin attended the First BRICS meeting of the Ministers/Senior Officials responsible for population matters (10-13 February 2015, Brasilia, Brasil). He made a presentation «Population Matters in the Russian Federation».

The ministerial meeting promoted the cooperation amongst BRICS countries in order to help them incorporate population-related factors into their national development plans.

There were six priority themes: maternal mortality; HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections (STIs); rural-urban migration and urbanization; gender differences in the labour market; gender equality and women’s role in caring for young children and the dependent elderly; and ageing and intergenerational transfers.

The First BRICS Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Population Matters discussed and established the guidelines for BRICS cooperation in population matters for the next six years, in light of other international commitments such as the Program of Action issued at the United Nations International Conference on Population and Development, held in Cairo.
